Misty Rain, porn mogul?
Well, maybe not quite yet, but that's certainly the direction the award-winning smut star sees herself heading in with her well-received new series, Misty Rain's World Wide Sex. Unlike the previous series - Misty Cam - that she and her longtime significant other, Chad Thomas, produced for Misty Rain Entertainment, Inc./Pure Filth Productions, they own the worldwide rights to MRWWS.
As much as she's loved being a performer since entering the business in 1992, the tall, svelte, bubbly beauty says, "My career is now moving into more of a producer/director situation. Much more than just going to the set and sitting there and reading some lines and having sex. But it's fun and more challenging actually because just making movies, just being an actress, won't always be challenging. So naturally, I'd like our company to grow wings and really be my main focus from now on."
Rain has been fairly selective about the productions she appears in, having made only about 250 tapes altogether in her nine years in the industry.
For three of those years, she was a contract girl at Metro, appearing in some 17 features. It's an experience she remembers, for the most part, fondly.
"I have to say that I did enjoy working a lot for Metro," she recalls. "The lines, the nice houses, the locations. We did make some really nice films together. It was really fun, even though I don't feel that I got the best roles."
Nonetheless, her work for Metro did land her an AVN Award for Best Couples Sex Scene - Film in 1997, for her pairing with Marc Wallice in James Avalon's Red Vibe Diaries ("I wanted so much to win for Best Supporting Actress," she notes. "But all my awards are for sex.") It was later revealed that Wallice was HIV positive, but Rain - knock on wood - managed to dodge that potentially fatal bullet.
Rain has also earned several other AVN Awards for all-girl work. She picked up two such honors in 1995 for a video fiveway with Jill Kelly, Felecia, Careena Collins and Traci Allen in Takin' It to Limit 6 from Bruce Seven Productions and a film threeway with Felecia and Jenteal in Fantasy Chamber from Ultimate Video.
The year before, she shared another all-girl award for a film threeway with Debi Diamond and Celeste in Ultimate's The Dinner Party. And in 1996, she received one more AVN statuette for a video threeway with Missy and Caressa Savage in Buttslammers the 13th, another Bruce Seven production.
The super-sordid Seven, who died last year, she says, was far and away her favorite director with whom to work.
"Oh, that was so much fun," she recalls. "He was so hardcore. I used to get so nervous, I couldn't even move when I used to go to work for him."
Rain and Thomas started their production company several years ago, churning out five volumes of their Misty Cam line for Metro. But they didn't own their own product.
Now, with MRWWS - three volumes of which have been released since September (Vol. 1 got a strong AAAA review in the January 2001 AVN) - they do.
Sort of a high-end XXX-rated travelogue hosted by, directed by (with an assist from Thomas) and starring Rain, the series is shot entirely outside the U.S.
"We both love the Travel Channel and the E! Channel's Wild On show and we wanted to try to bring those two together with sex," Rain explains. "Right now we're shooting mostly in Europe. But we want to go to Brazil, Australia, everywhere. There's so many pretty people all over the world. Let's just shoot them all."
